Ah yes, the home office!  It can be a curse or a blessing and that depends, in part, on the home office furniture you choose when setting it up.  Home office furniture should be the best quality you can afford.  There’s a lot to choose from that’s both functional and professional and won’t break the bank.
Before you begin setting up your work space or buying new home office furniture think
about the space and how it will be used.  Will you be spending full eight hour days there or longer?  Do you have a business partner’s needs to consider?  Will you be having clients and prospective clients come through?  Keep it clean and business-like at all times.  Ditch the empty coffee cups, the running shoes, and yesterday’s lunch plate.
Make the space functional for your needs.  Is the wiring in a good location for your computer(s), fax machine, and lighting?  Does it have enough air circulation?  Where are the phone jacks?  Do you need space within your space for packaging and mailing a product?  Is there enough room for filing cabinets, book cases, lamps, a small table, and an extra chair or two?
Start with the basics and remember the three rules to live by when purchasing home office furniture; buy only what you need and spend the bulk of your budget where it will serve you best.  And the third rule, probably the most important one, is; invest in a good chair.  One that’s ergonomically correct for your height, weight, work style and can be adjusted when needed.  Trust me, spend the bulk of your budget on a good chair, and your back will thank you every day!
Having a home office is fun and exciting. When buying home office furniture don’t get caught up in all the new-fangled widgets out there, just stick with the basics. That way your home office will present as professional and be functional.  Plus, you’ll have money left over for other stuff – like office supplies!
