Too many people choose not to go to college, because they don’t know what they want to be. If this sounds like you, don’t get discouraged. This is a question that many people wrestle with. At seventeen years-old it is difficult to have the knowledge about all of your possible career options. But that is not a good reason to not go to college.
You don’t have to know what you want to do with the rest of your life to be a success. This doesn’t signify a lack of ambition. It just means that you haven’t been exposed to the options available. There is a simple trick to figuring out what major to select in college. The answer is in your recent past. You’ve spent thirteen years attending classes by the time you reach high school graduation. You know what subjects you enjoyed and which gave you chills just thinking about them.
Are you a math or a science person? Did you like to figure out problems at your desk? Did you ace every math test without studying? Was the periodic table of elements easy for you to understand, and enjoy doing experiments? Reading and writing, how about them? Possibly your favorite thing was reading, language or history classes. You already know what you like to study, that is the point. You can figure our who you are and who you will become just by looking at this information. But this is a very general term. Look at many job titles.
Identical Job Titles Can Refer to Very Different Jobs
There is not an absolute for a job title. You can have the same job title at three different companies and have three very different jobs. To the contrary, the same job at three different companies can have three different job titles. The job of a marketing manager is a great example. At company ‘A,’ a mid-sized firm, this person manages the brand and is involved with developing all promotional materials for the sales staff. In a large company, Company “B”, the person is in charge of a small staff and helps promote the company The person at company “C” basically helps the owner and does sales. Yet all three hold the title of marketing manager.
The above example demonstrates that a job title is merely a label. Don’t focus on job titles when choosing a career path. Think instead about what you like to do and the atmosphere in which you like to work. Some people have to be outside for at least part of the day or they get the jitters. Others like to work quietly alone at a desk.
What you are doing is just as important as where you are working. But don’t make firm decisions now. College is a great opportunity to explore your options. Another thing to remember about job titles is that they are not absolute. In fact, as the years pass, those options will change as technology changes. When jobs become obsolete, others will emerge.
