Obviously not everybody is able to work remotely as some vocations require workers to go to their office or travel to perform their duties in person. But for those of us who are allowed to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and give some practical wisdom by distributing it on the web in the hope that I could give others useful advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.
I would caution you that there are a substantial number of self proclaimed ‘gurus’ out there who will try and make you purchase courses for big sums of cash, believe me you don’t have to do this.
I am blessed to be able to work wherever I choose and just about everybody who asks me what work I do wants to know how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be mislead here I am still improving the science of remote working as everyday I find tribes on the web who tell me about new tricks and I am constantly uncovering new systems and ways that make my life easier and make me more efficient.
Throughout the past seven years I have substantially adapted my working methods to enable me to do all of my work remotely with a mixture of internet tools and robust self discipline. One lunchtime whilst exploring the Internet I unearthed Quickbooks online and this made me think about what just might be possible. My discovery of ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a special moment for me and the start of my ‘remote working career.
I have got to mention up front that proficiently working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self management. Working remotely also means stating to your team members, managers and clients as to what they can expect and how they will communicate with you.
In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Self discipline essentials’ I discuss how to focus.
