No matter how highly rated the college you attended was, there is no perfect education to prepare you for everything that you will encounter at work. Aside from the actual work that you do, you will be surrounded by a variety of personalities, prejudices, and people who have their own agendas. Accept Differences

Let’s say, for example that at your first job, when the telephone rang, someone was expected to pick it up or the boss yelled. At your second job you answer the ringing phone at someone else’s desk. When the person who sits at that desk caught you answering their phone, they yelled. Sometimes you just can’t win, because the rules at one workplace don’t always apply equally across the board. 

At the first company, the management believed that there was no excuse to let a phone go to voice mail. Your second company had a different view. It will take time to learn the details at each company that you work. The way to accomplish this is to ask a lot of questions and approach each new job with an opened mind. There may be a friendly person who will take you under their wing and show you around.

A Peek Into Company Culture

Company culture encompasses your interactions with customers, co-workers and even the way you dress. Knowing how to dress may be hard if you’ve been out of work for awhile. If it’s a large company it may have a handbook that will outline the dress code. Observing your coworkers is one of the best ways to figure out what to wear. Also take note of their mannerisms. You may be able to use your cell phone during the day if you notice everyone else using theirs. If no one else seems to be using their phones, the best option is to keep it on vibrate, or off, and in your bag.

There are so many things to learn when starting a new job, it amazing that anyone can prove to be successful. You will find it to be easier at a new job to fit in if you go in with an open mind, play by the culture rules, and ask a lot of questions. Keeping an open mind means not making assumptions about the company or the people. Give yourself time to fit in. It is better to float in softly like a butterfly, than to knock down walls like a bulldozer.
